"Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much."
- Helen Keller
In the past 12 years, dramatic change in the world water crisis is demonstrated through the global concern and determined efforts to drill water wells. This concern has reduced the frequency of death caused by waterborne illness from 1 every 8 seconds to 1 every 20 seconds.
I know, I know, 1 every 20 seconds is still an unconscionable injustice, it truly is, and together we will continue to make a great impact. But just stop for a minute and celebrate those children who will live to see their 5th birthday. The fact is, 120% more children will live than would have just 8 years ago. Let me restate that fact another way, 8 years ago 7 children under the age of 5 would die every minute of every day because of waterborne illness. Today that number is only 3 per minute!
I can still remember the very first hand-dug well I looked into 8 years ago. It was in a little village about 20 miles outside of San Salvador, El Salvador. I thought it was being used for the livestock stalled all around it, but to my dismay, it wasn’t only for the animals. The missionary drew up the bucket filled with stagnate water, mosquito larvae and water scum. The stench was so bad it would make you sick. It was the only water source for the families that lived nearby.
Over the past eight years, I have witnessed that scene play out over and over again all over the world. Yet we keep pressing on because we know that we are making a difference. Join the Cause!
